Introduction

At http://www.wai-not.be everyone will get access to the website specially built for children and youngsters with a mental disability. Special webpages were created for children and youngsters with a light mental disability (the Digispecials), for children and youngsters with a moderate mental disability (the Clickers) and for children and youngsters with a severe mental disability (the Plussers).

WAI-NOT offers several components:

A central children/youngsters website where non-regional subjects occur like current affairs, games, lifestyle-topics, ….

The opportunity to participate in a network of local WAI-NOT sites where specific local information can be presented. Schools, family groups, associations ... have a number of pages to their disposal on which they can offer local information to their children and youngsters. These sites work according to the WAI-NOT lay-out, navigation and access principles.

Special e-mail software. This is a special Internet application that enables people to e-mail with the help of communication supportive tools (Beta-pictures). This means you don’t have to be able to read or write to e-mail on the WAI-NOT site.

Some interactive components of the WAI-NOT website, like for example the local sites, the e-mail software, the guestbook or the participation in competitions, are only accessible for registered children/youngsters or groups (these can be schools, family groups, families, classes, …). This means you need a licence to use these components.

Each school, family group, family can take part in the WAI-NOT community and therefore make use of the special WAI-NOT tools such as the e-mail software, or create their own pages on the Internet with the local WAI-NOT sites concept. Once decided they want to take part in the WAI-NOT community, they have tocreate a WAI-NOT department. The term ‘department’ will be used in this manual from now on.

  • assign a WAI-NOT responsible within the group. This responsible, or head coach as we call him, can be the school’s ICT responsible, supervisor of the family group, parent of the youngster, ….. The coach’s main assignments are to:
    • Administer the licences
    • Register and guide new assistants (sub-coaches) within the own department.
    • Help users within own department.
    • Administer the department’s local WAI-NOT site (if any).

To put it briefly, the head coach is the local WAI-NOT animator and administrator within a WAI-NOT department.

Off course the head coach doesn’t have to do this all by himself. On the WAI-NOT site the necessary tools are provided to administer and to maintain sub-departments, new assistants, licences, the application of a number of WAI-NOT tools like the e-mail software, as well as the local site. To do all this, he uses the administration module. The administration and the administer-tools available are user friendly.

In addition to this, we have the WAI-NOT guidance. We offer the necessary guidance via e-mail; and even offer local guidance for setting-up.

The WAI-NOT licence

The licence is the authorization to use the special WAI-NOT tools. This licence is not tied to one particular PC or location. Through a log in procedure, based on this licence, people can surf the WAI-NOT site as registered users from every PC and from every location. It is the assistant’s task to register the children and youngsters. Each registration stands for one licence.

In exceptional cases, for example when children/youngsters who are not attached to an existing WAI-NOT department want to e-mail with WAI-NOT, a registration can be asked at the WAI-NOT secretariat (secretariaat@wai-not.org ). This is done with a simple mail to the secretariat, containing following data:

  • name and first name
  • date of birth
  • address and telephone number
  • level (plusser, clicker or digispecial)
  • language (Dutch, English, French of Portuguese)
  • possibly a photograph or a picture (must be less than 20 Kb !) that can be used to log in.

Until the end of 2003 the licence will be free of charge. After this period a contribution of €3.00 will be charged per year per licence. This contribution is payable by deposit at the start of each calendar year at

  • For Belgian WAI-NOT users: VZW WAI-NOT (account number 734-0058895-25) with name and the number of licences stated clearly.
  • For WAI-NOT users from the Netherlands: De Brug (account number………..)
  • For Portuguese WAI-NOT users: APPACDM (account number…………..)

The WAI-NOT secretary will invite you to do so via e-mail. Once your contribution is received, the WAI-NOT secretary will automatically extend the licences for one year.

Create a WAI-NOT department ……

Becoming a WAI-NOT coach and creating a WAI-NOT department within your own environment in no time...

  • Contact the WAI-NOT secretariat at secretariaat@wai-not.org
  • The secretariat will request some data (name of the institution, name, first name, e-mail address, the number of licences asked for, …)   and will complete the necessary administration to make you a WAI-NOT coach.
  • The secretariat will also send you the necessary log in data (Username and Password). With these log in data you have access to the administration module. You reach the administration module by clicking the ‘login coaches’ button at the bottom of this page OR directly at http://www.wai-not.be/admin/
  • This administration module enables you to :
    • Add and administer new assistants.
    • Add and administer sub-departments within your WAI-NOT department.
    • Register the licences and the users and administer their mailboxes.
    • Get access to and administer your own local WAI-NOT site.
  • Within your own WAI-NOT department you can call in assistant coaches to help you. These assistant coaches can also register children/youngsters or publish local webpages. Teacher x of class z in school y, for example, can run the WAI-NOT business for her class herself in a user friendly way.
  • You (or the assistant coaches) can now start registering children and youngsters.
  • The final piece is your own space on the Net: your local WAI-NOT pages. You can build this up slowly …. A very user friendly template is provided within WAI-NOT to do so. Basic computer skills are enough; you don’t have to be an experienced web builder.

If you need any help in setting up or do you think some personal guidance or explanation from WAI-NOT would be helpful, please let us know at secretariaat@wai-not.org.
